I first heard about Alex Winston on The Wild Honey Pie a couple years ago and have been a fan ever since. Her strong, catchy indie pop sound and, at times, eerie voice are what set her apart from other current indie musicians, in my opinion. Check out the acoustic version of Velvet Elvis as well. I actually like it more than the original.

Australian band Tame Impala recently came out with their new album, Lonerism. Elephant was the first track off it I heard, and I’d say it’s probably my favorite off the album. The band mixes a lot of different sounds, resulting in music that sounds both old and new. If you haven’t given Lonerism a listen yet, I highly recommend you do. You won’t be disappointed.

I think I’ve posted about Hey Rosetta! before, but I remembered this music video and thought it would be a good one to share. Like the song itself, it’s so powerful and I think it’s something everyone would enjoy. Since this music video came out, the band has been using sparklers almost as an image, as it appears in their Yer Fall music video (another favorite of mine).

I can tell that Saint Motel is going to be big in the music industry—or at least in the world of indie music. Their music has the same beachy sound as bands like Young the Giant and the Vaccines, which makes sense since they are from Los Angeles, CA. I love the guitar’s power in their music, and the vocals have almost a haunting feeling to them. I also think this song’s lyrics are quite relatable to our generation.

“I had such high hopes for the minds of our generation
We had some goals, we could reach out and take them
Instead we’re apart, no movement to follow
We are just stuck inside their business model”

Keep an ear out for Saint Motel.

I’ve been listening to this song nonstop for the past couple weeks. I think the interesting artistic display in the video goes well with the song by combining the colors and feelings associated with summer weather, as the song depicts. No other song is more perfectly fitting for summertime than this one.

Today, Freelance Whales made a very exciting announcement! Their second album, Diluvia, will be released on October 9 of this year. In addition to this news, they also released the first single off the album, Locked Out, which is available for free download on their website. Based on Locked Out, I think that Diluvia will be a great followup to Weathervanes.

I have listened to this song so many times within the last several hours. It’s so beautiful, and it reminds me of both the Beatles and the Beach Boys. This is probably my favorite song off the album. I personally think all of It’s A Corporate World would make a good summer soundtrack. This band has similarities with a lot of great indie bands that are around today, like The Black Keys, Two Door Cinema Club, Telekinesis, and Death Cab For Cutie. They have so many different sounds

Discovery is a group that Ra Ra Riot vocalist Wes Miles and Vampire Weekend keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij formed in 2005. Their music is a little more experimental than either member’s main band, with a lot of interesting vocal effects and percussion. You can hear all the songs off their LP on their website here. If you’re a big Ezra Koenig fan like I am, be sure to listen to Carby. He sings the lead vocals in it.
